THE COLOUR STUDIES

AN EXPLORATION OF FLOWER COLOUR

Welcome to The Colour Studies, a growing archive investigating the colour palettes of the seasons through observation, arrangement, photography, and pigment. Each study begins with the flowers chosen and gathered and then expands into an exploration of the chromatic relationships that define a particular moment in the garden. Flowers offer some of the most sophisticated expressions of colour found in nature. Their hues are rarely singular or static. Petals contain layers of tone, temperature, and luminosity that shift with age, weather, light, and season. The Colour Studies seeks to document this complexity through visual essays that record colour not as a fixed thing, but as a living and changing phenomenon. Part botanical record, part artistic enquiry, each study considers how colour shapes our experience of flowers, the garden, and the seasons. The Colour Studies form a growing library of seasonal palettes, archiving the fleeting colours of the garden and offering inspiration and a deeper understanding of the visual language of flowers.

The Colour Studies is an exploration of floral colour and a process of seasonal archiving that engages more deeply with the sensory world of flowers. Through the careful observation of colour, we document the shifting palettes of the garden and consider how colour shapes our experience of flowers, place, atmosphere, and season.

Each study forms part of a growing body of work created for Seasonal Pursuits, sitting alongside our scent ledgers, seasonal recipes, and botanical observations. Together, these studies create an evolving archive of floral materials and moments in time. They offer a more attentive way of seeing and working with flowers, fostering a deeper understanding of the subtle relationships between colour, seasonality, and the landscapes from which they emerge.
