THE SCENT LEDGERS

Observations on FLORAL scent through the turning seasons.

Welcome to The Scent Ledgers, an archive and library of floral scent where we record the subtle and transient fragrances of individual flower varieties as they represent the seasons of the garden. Scent is one of the most fleeting and emotive qualities of a flower and holds an extraordinary botanical and sensory significance that is rarely documented. Each scent ledger is an attempt to capture this ephemerality, to notice and preserve the intimate language of floral scent as it exists in a particular place, and a moment in time.

Scent is naturally episodic and seasonal, and so each scent ledger focuses on a particular flower variety and the month when it is in season. This mirrors how people experience scent in reality; fragmented, time-bound, memorable. The Scent Ledgers are a means to understand flowers not only through their form and colour, but through their communication with pollinators, atmosphere, memory, and emotional resonance within our lives.

The Scent Ledgers is a library of floral scent and a process of archiving which engages more deeply with the sensory world of flowers. Through an ongoing exploration of floral scent, we notice the subtle, often overlooked fragrances that shape our experience of flowers, the garden, and the seasons. This growing collection of scent observations sits alongside other studies created for our Seasonal Pursuits membership, forming an evolving archive of botanical materials, atmospheres, and moments in time. This library of materials offers a more attentive and creative way of working with flowers, and a deeper connection to the landscapes from which they emerge.
