A kenzan, sometimes known as a pin frog or flower frog, is a simple, weighted base covered with fine pins that holds stems securely in place. It is one of our favourite tools for creating naturalistic, garden-style arrangements. Unlike floral foam, a kenzan is reusable, long-lasting, and wonderfully simple to use. It allows you to work with flowers in a much more open and considered way, giving each stem space to breathe and creating the illusion that the flowers are growing naturally from the vessel.

Discover the art of arranging with a kenzan
We will begin by demonstrating how to position and secure stems in a kenzan, exploring how the placement of each flower affects the shape, movement and balance of the whole arrangement.

You will learn how to:
Choose the right kenzan and vessel for your design
Select flowers and foliage that work beautifully with this technique
Position and secure stems without relying on floral foam
Create a sense of movement and natural growth
Use space between stems to create a light, airy composition
Build shape and balance while allowing flowers to retain their natural character
Consider the relationship between the flowers, the vessel, and the space around them

We will discuss the principles behind naturalistic floristry and demonstrate how a relatively simple structure can create a wonderfully expressive and elegant arrangement. With guidance from Lauren & Louisina, you will create your own seasonal arrangement using a kenzan, with plenty of individual support and opportunity to ask questions along the way.
 
Flowers that look as though they are growing
Our approach to floristry is inspired by the garden. Rather than forcing flowers into rigid shapes, we love to work with their natural movement, character and imperfections. The kenzan is a wonderful tool for this way of arranging because it gives us enough structure to support the flowers while still allowing them to move, breathe and appear as they would in the garden. You will learn to look at your flowers differently, considering the direction of a stem, the space between two flowers, the curve of a branch and the way a bloom sits within its vessel. These small decisions are what give a naturalistic arrangement its sense of ease.

A sustainable alternative to floral foam
We don't use floral foam in any of our work or teaching. A kenzan offers a simple, reusable alternative for many types of floral arrangement; it is a tool for life and it can be used again and again. We will share some of our favourite ways to work with kenzans, as well as ideas for working thoughtfully with seasonal and locally grown flowers. The techniques you will learn can be adapted to many different vessels and flower combinations, making a kenzan a must-have addition to your floristry toolkit.
 
Learn with two generations of florists
Lauren & Louisina bring two generations of floristry experience to the studio, along with a shared love of seasonal flowers, natural materials and garden-inspired design. Our classes are relaxed, generous and informal. We want you to leave not only with a beautiful arrangement, but with a better understanding of why it works and the confidence to continue exploring the technique at home.
You will be encouraged to develop your own eye and creative style rather than simply reproducing a finished design.

There will be a seasonal selection of our farm-grown flowers and foliage to work with. Our workshops always use our own farm-grown flowers. We never use imported flowers, floral foam or plastic in any of our work or teaching.
