Join Lauren and Louisina in their polytunnel of roses for an evening of flowers and scent. Inspired by the concept of a wine tasting, The Rose Scent Salon invites you to experience roses through scent, language, emotion, and focused attention. Explore a curated collection of garden roses, experience their unique and complex fragrance, and learn how to identify their distinctive scent profiles from citrus, spice, myrrh, tea, fruit, woodland notes, classic floral notes, and more.
Throughout the evening, we will discuss why flowers evolved scent, the relationship between fragrance and pollinators, the psychology of scent and memory in humans, the history of fragrant roses in cultivation, and how perfume changes with weather, time, and season. You will closely experience the most exquisite garden roses and be guided through a special, sensory scent-mapping experience, using botanical note cards, scent wheels and observation prompts to guide you through the scents and build your own rose scent vocabulary. As the evening concludes, you will create and seal a personal botanical scent in a glass vial to take home.
This special event is hosted at twilight during the garden’s most atmospheric hours. As the sun sets and the evening air cools, the roses reveal their different qualities, fragrance becomes more noticeable and immersive, and we experience the changing perfume of each rose variety as the garden moves from day into night.
This is a special, unique, and sensory experience centred around flowers, observation, and the atmosphere and brevity of a rose garden in bloom.
